Purrfect time to help local animal welfare programs

We usually pay special attention to our local animal welfare programs in the spring, when shelters get overrun by dumped pets and spay/neuter programs are trying to  get ahead as we go into mating season. But both M-SNAP and Animal Friends of North Central West Virginia have some exciting things going on this fall.

M-SNAP (Mountaineer Spay Neuter Assistance Program) has moved its beloved ReTails store from the Morgantown Mall to WesMon Plaza on Commerce Drive in Westover. The secondhand shop supports M-SNAP’s spay/neuter voucher program, which allows Mon County residents to get their pet spayed or neutered for free.

The new location will hopefully make life easier for shoppers interested in ReTails’ larger goods, like furniture and small appliances. They’ll be able to take their purchasers straight out the doors and into their cars, instead of winding through the mall’s corridors. So if you’re in the market for gently used fine china, dishes, cookware, artwork, purses, books, jewelry, small kitchen appliances, toys, wooden furniture, couches, chairs, throw pillows and more, visit ReTails and help a good cause.

The new location will be open 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Tuesday–Saturday. Donations can also be made on Mondays by calling ahead at 304-241-1483.

While M-SNAP is celebrating its new storefront, Animal Friends of North Central West Virginia is hoping to raise enough money to open a new location of its own. The region’s first no-kill shelter is starting a campaign to collect

$2 million to build a new facility on the same grounds.

The planned 6,700-square-foot facility will have five rooms for dogs, a senior dog area and a dog playroom and training center; two adult cat rooms and three kitten rooms; nursery rooms, an isolation room for sick animals and a grooming room; and a formal lobby, an intake room, storage rooms, a food storage and preparation room and spaces for shelter staff and volunteers.

If you’d like to help, donations are accepted on the Animal Friends website, at animalfriendswv.org, through Venmo @AFNCWV or by cash or check mailed to Animal Friends of North Central WV, P.O. Box 1090, Dellslow, WV 26531. You can also take donations directly to the shelter or the Animal Friends Thrift Shoppe location at the Mountaineer Mall on Green Bag Road in Morgantown.
