Mountaineers ranked No. 1 for 1st time in program history

For the first time in program history, the West Virginia University men’s soccer team sits atop the United Soccer Coaches poll.

The Mountaineers also are ranked No. 1 by Top Drawer Soccer.

West Virginia is 3-0-0 on the season, having outscored its opponents,12-2, and are coming off back-to-back 4-0 shutouts against Saint Francis and George Washington.

Graduate student Simon Carlson was been named the Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week. He also earned a spot on the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week.

Carlson tallied eight points in two games this past week for the Mountaineers, scoring three goals and collecting two assists. He now has four assists on the season, tied for most in the nation.

The Kennesaw, Ga. native opened the week with two goals and an assist in a 4-0 win over Saint Francis before registering a goal and an assist in another 4-0 win over George Washington.

Carlson is the second straight Mountaineer to take home the Sun Belt honor after graduate student Sergio Ors Navarro won it with a hat trick performance in week one of the season. Overall, Carlson is the fifth WVU player to earn Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week in the last three seasons since joining the conference.

Ors Navarro is second in the country with six goals while Carlson has three goals and is tied for the NCAA lead with four assists.

Junior Marcus Caldeira, the Sun Belt Preseason Player of the Year, scored in WVU’s most recent game while junior Felix Ewald has chipped in with two goals as well.

West Virginia will be back on the pitch this Friday, Sept. 6, at California Baptist. Kickoff is set for 10 p.m.
