Rocky roads now smooth sailing

The W.Va. 7 repaving project is complete and, oh, is it beautiful!

The formerly cratered route from the Walnut Street Bridge to Hartman Run Road — encompassing Brockway Avenue, the dreaded Hogback Turn and a stretch of Earl L. Core Road — has been scraped down to the foundation and filled in fresh. What was previously a pothole-laden obstacle course is now 1.5 miles of smooth sailing. And for the first time in years, Hogback Turn is wrinkle-free (and less likely to toss you into opposing traffic).

The West Virginia Division of Highways did a fantastic job. We know this repaving project was more intensive than others. Speculation suggested old bricks and trolley tracks under the asphalt contributed to the road’s constant deterioration. We hope digging down a little deeper to pour a new base layer will keep the street looking good (and riding smooth) longer than past attempts.

We must also give kudos to WVDOH for the work done on W.Va. 705 between the Mileground roundabout and Suncrest Towne Centre Drive, as well as on University Avenue between the McDonald’s and the WVU Law School. Where once we feared to tread, now we can drive with confidence and ride in comfort.

All of us are quick to point out when the pavement wears down to the bricks or a plethora of potholes makes a street a nightmare to travail. We’re much slower to acknowledge and express gratitude when our complaints have been heard and the problems fixed. So, to the workers of WVDOH District 4: Your hard work is seen and very much appreciated.
