David Scott Mefford, a cherished husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away in his hometown of Morgantown on August 18, 2024, surrounded by the love and warmth of his family.
Born on June 7, 1947, a son of the late Dane Edward and Ruth Jean Morris Mefford, David’s journey was one marked by unwavering dedication to his family, a commendable work ethic and a life filled with joyous pursuits.
David proudly served his country as a veteran of the U.S. Navy, a chapter of his life that shaped many of his lasting values and friendships. After his service, he embarked on a career in construction, where he mastered the art of heavy equipment operation. His remarkable skill and resolution earned him respect among his peers and pride from his loved ones.
Family was the cornerstone of David’s life. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Shirley Shuppe Mefford, who stood by him as a pillar of love and support through the tapestry of their life together. Though preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law. Rich Nolf and brother and sister-in-law, Wayne Mefford (Delores), David’s legacy shines vibrantly through his daughters and sons-in-law, Erica Barnett (Bobby), Stacey Fox (Calvin), Dianna Jackson (Vaughn) and Stephania Utzman (Logan), who will forever cherish the principles and love he instilled in them.
David is survived by his siblings and their spouses, Ruthie Kilionski (Johnny), Linda Johnson (Jerry), Donna Nolf, Bud Mefford (Carolyn) and Randy Mefford (Sue). His vibrant life echoes in the halls of memory preserved by his adoring grandchildren, Michael, Haley, Matthew, Shelby, James, Laci and Wyatt; and his great-grandchildren, Jeremiah, Isabelle, Isaac, Hannah, Owen, Emerson, Kairi, Christopher and Levi.
Known for his sarcastic nature, David’s amiable nature extended beyond his kin. He was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan, and his love for watching YouTube videos, driving his truck and unwavering support for Trump were facets of a life enriched by passion. But the pinnacle of David’s affections was, without question, for his “girls,” who gave him boundless pride and joy.
With a life well-lived and a family well-loved, David Scott Mefford’s legacy of kindness, strength, and dedication will be celebrated and remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Friends will be received at McCulla Funeral Home from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 21, and again from 10 a.m. on Thursday until the 11 a.m. service time with Pastor Jon Henry officiating. Interment will follow at the Beverly Hills Cemetery with full military honors.
