Lemuel “Bub” Bernard Powers, 95, of Morgantown, formerly of Ridgeley, W.Va., died at the Morgantown Healthcare Center (Hospice) in Morgantown on Tuesday, August 13, 2024.
Born in Glady, W.Va. on Dec. 14, 1928, he was a son of the late Lona K. (Cave) Powers and Lemuel Jade Powers.
In addition to his parents, Bub was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret “Peggy” Ann Powers to whom he was married for 62 years. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Lorraine and Loretta; and his brothers, Lester, Lawrence and Lewis.
After Peggy’s death in March 2012, he continued to live in their home in Ridgeley, W.Va. until Oct. 2021 when he moved to Morgantown and resided with his son, Randy. In March 2023, he moved into an apartment (assisted living) at The Village at Heritage Point in Morgantown.
Bub graduated from Ridgeley High School, class of 1948.
Along with his wife, he owned and operated the Ridgeley Dairy Queen from 1960-82. He was employed by the Mineral County Board of Education as a school bus driver from 1976-91. During his life, he was also employed by Allegany Ballistics Laboratory and Western Maryland Railroad.
Bub served in the U.S. Naval Reserves from 1959-97. He was a member of the Ridgeley Lions Club and Calvary United Methodist Church.
Bub is survived by his children, Roxann Moreland and husband, David, of Bruceton Mills, Rodney Powers and wife, Libby, of Morgantown, Randall Powers, of Morgantown; grandchildren, Adam Moreland and wife, Julie, of Atlanta, Maggie Wright and husband, Zachary, of Pittsburgh, Ethan Powers, of Newark, N.J., Lucy and Wade Powers, of Morgantown, Isaiah Powers, of Buckhanon; great-granddaughter, Olivia “Livy” Moreland, of Atlanta; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Per Bub’s request, he will be cremated, followed by a private graveside service. The Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., Cumberland, Md., is in charge of arrangements.
