WVJC School of Nursing showcases innovative Mobile Nursing Lab and Mon Health collaboration

WVJC School of Nursing officials and Krystal Atkinson, chief nursing executive of the Mon Health System, hosted  Jason Altmire, former United States Congressman and current president and CEO of Career Education Colleges and Universities (CECU), and  Sue Painter, executive director of the West Virginia RN Board for a tour.

The tour consisted of a visit to the Mon Health Medical Center and one of WVJC’s state-of-the-art Mobile Nursing Labs, where  Altmire and  Painter were able to witness hands-on lab experiences and simulations with students in the WVJC School of Nursing at Mon Health program.

Both distinguished guests had the opportunity to speak directly to student nurses during their clinical experiences, offering words of encouragement.  Altmire highlighted the excellence of WVJC School of Nursing’s programs.

“I have visited career schools across the country, and the nursing program at West Virginia Junior College is as good as any I’ve seen. The mobile simulation lab, combined with the innovative online coursework, provides students from across West Virginia the opportunity to benefit from the program,” said  Altmire. “WVJC’s strong partnership with Mon Health gives students the real-world, hands-on experience necessary to excel as nursing professionals. WVJC’s program is a huge benefit to communities throughout West Virginia, especially those in rural areas struggling with a skills gap driven by a shortage of healthcare workers.”

The goal of the WVJC School of Nursing at Mon Health program is to provide quality training and in-hospital experiences to students nurses. Upon graduation and passing the NCLEX-RN licensure exam, these nurses will go on to work in a Mon Health System facility.

Passing the NCLEX-RN is required to become a registered nurse.

“It is a tremendous honor to have Dr. Altmire express interest in our innovative nursing education model. We are humbled that he took the time to make a special trip to West Virginia to see our program firsthand,” said WVJC School of Nursing CEO Chad Callen. “His visit is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our faculty, staff and students, and it reinforces our commitment to excellence in nursing education.”

Potential nursing students interested in enrolling in the next class start for the WVJC School of Nursing at Mon Health program are encouraged to begin the application process immediately. Seats for the April 2025 cohort are limited and highly competitive. Visit wvjc.edu for more information.
