Harry Glenn Lewis Sr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather and U.S. Army veteran passed away on July 30, 2024, in Morgantown.
He was born to the late John W. Lewis Jr and Helen (Steiniweg) Lewis on March 15, 1942, in Elizabeth, Pa.
Harry graduated from Elizabeth Forward High School in 1960 and continued his love of learning by earning a Master of Chemistry at Pennsylvania State University, Master of Education at Pittsburgh University and Master of Special Education at West Virginia University. Prior to his retirement, Harry worked for Monongalia County Schools in the Even Start Family Literacy Program.
In 1965 he married the love of his life, Hannah (Forrest) Lewis. During their marriage they lovingly raised four children and eight grandchildren. His children and grandchildren meant the world to him, and we will all miss the wonderful man whom we nicknamed “Poppy.”
My father was the smartest man I’ve ever known. He was always there to lend a hand with our homework, help study for upcoming exams and proofread our papers. I wish he were here to proofread this obituary that I’m struggling to write in his honor.
Harry was preceded in death by one grandson, Alexander Michael, whom I’m sure he met with open arms. I know they are together again watching down on us, and that gives us tremendous comfort.
Surviving is his wife of 59 years, Hannah Lewis, of Morgantown; one son, Harry Lewis Jr. (April), of Bruceton Mills; and three daughters, Kimberly Pataky (Marty), of Manassas, Va., Jayme Hess, of Morgantown, and Kristen Lewis (Brandon), of Morgantown; and seven grandchildren, Joshua Sewitch, Jacob Lewis, Abby Lewis, Isaac Lewis, Emma Hess, Joseph Hess and James Hall.
Per his wife’s wishes, he was cremated by Hastings Funeral Home in Morgantown. His remains will be buried in a private family burial at the WV National Cemetery in Grafton with military honors.
