Mountaineers begin fall practice today

The 2024 college football season is just around the corner as the West Virginia Mountaineers will hold their first of 15 fall practices today.

The Mountaineers, who open the season at home against Penn State on Aug. 31, will also practice on Thursday and Friday this week before holding Fan Day at Milan Puskar Stadium on Saturday morning.

Fan Day will begin at 9:20 a.m. on the west concourse inside Milan Puskar Stadium. Head coach Neal Brown as well as assistant coaches and players will be present to sign autographs.

The autograph session will conclude at 11 a.m., at which point fans will be able to watch the team practice in the stadium until 1 p.m.

After Saturday, the team will practice almost daily until the first day of fall classes on Aug. 21. WVU will then begin regular game prep for the season opener on the following Saturday.

Greene on Maxwell watch list

Earlier this week, senior quarterback Garrett Greene was named to the Maxwell Award Watch List, presented to the outstanding player in college football. A total of 80 athletes were named to the preseason watch list, headlined by five semifinalists from last seasonAlabama quarterback Jalen Milroe, Georgia quarterback Carson Beck, Missouri receiver Luther Burden III, Oklahoma State running back Ollie Gordon III and Liberty quarterback Kaidon Salter.

Former Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. won the 2023 Maxwell Award and was selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the first round of the NFL Draft. Greene threw for 2,406 yards and 16 touchdowns in his first season as WVUs starter. He completed 53% of his passes and was only intercepted four times. On the ground, Greene ran for 772 yards and 13 more scores.

Milum named to Outland list

Senior left tackle Wyatt Milum, WVUs lone preseason all-Big 12 preseason, has been named to the Outland Trophy watch list. The Outland Trophy is given to the best interior lineman in college football. There were 75 players on the preseason watch list.

Milum has started in 32 of 36 games at tackle for WVU, including 31 in a row in games that he has played. He was named All-Big 12 by all of the preseason publications and was a preseason All-American third-team honree by Phil Steele. He was a 2023 All-Big 12 Conference second-team selection and did not allow a sack or a quarterback hit and only eight quarterback pressures in 305 pass blocking snaps in 2023.

He was a member of an offensive line that led Power Five in rushing yards per game and was No. 3 nationally in fewest sacks allowed.

Brinkman on Patrick

Mannelly watch list Senior Austin Brinkman was one of 30 long snappers named to the Patrick Mannelly Award watch list.

Awarded to the best FBS long snapper, the Patrick Mannelly Award has been given every year since 2019.

Brinkman has started every game for the Mountaineers since his redshirt freshman season in 2021, 38 straight.
