A single lane of Interstate 68 westbound was shut down near the Monongalia/Preston county line Tuesday afternoon following an accident involving a vehicle towing a horse trailer at the 113 mile marker.
According to Monongalia County 911 Director Jimmy Smith, the truck lost control and careened off the roadway over an embankment.
The horse trailer, which carried two horses, broke away from the vehicle and remained upright with the horses inside, Smith said.
One patient was transported by ambulance to J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital for treatment, Mon EMS Director Forest Weyen said. A second patient was evaluated on scene but did not request transport.
The horses suffered some minor injuries, but officials said they should be fine. A veterinarian was called to the scene to examine them.
The Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department is looking into what might have caused the accident.
The interstate was fully reopened by 4:30 p.m.
