MARTINSBURG — Morgantown Post 2 will play for the West Virginia American Legion Baseball state championship Monday after defeating Charleston Post 65 14-0 in five innings on Sunday afternoon at P.O. Faulkner Park in Martinsburg.
With the victory, Morgantown will hold the advantage in Monday’s championship series against Wheeling Post 1, needing only one win to Wheeling’s two.
This is Morgantown’s 21st consecutive victory.
Post 2 starting pitcher Brady McNew gave up only one hit on Sunday. His offense came alive in the fourth and fifth innings, scoring six runs in both frames.
First baseman Caleb Cottle produced two hits and four RBI with two runs scored against Post 68, including a bases-clearing double that brought three runs home in the top of the fourth to spark the Morgantown offense.
Despite four walks, McNew was efficient on the mound, throwing all five innings for Post 2 with three strikeouts. The former Preston High captain forced Charleston into double-play ground balls to end each of the opening two innings.
Morgantown Post 2 will aim to capture another West Virginia American Legion State Baseball championship against Wheeling Post 1 at P.O. Faulkner Park in Martinsburg. The first pitch for Game 1 is set for 1:00 p.m., with a decisive Game 2 happening 30 minutes after the conclusion of Game 1.
