Thomas slam lifts Post 2 to opening-round win in state tournament

MARTINSBURG — After trailing 4-1 early in its opening round contest at the W. Va. American Legion State Baseball tournament, Morgantown Post 2 scored ten unanswered runs on the way to an 11-6 victory over Berkeley Post 14.

Post 2 starter Tristan Milik gave up all four of his runs in the first inning but held the Hornets scoreless through his final five as the Morgantown offense came alive in support.

Dylan Travinski hit a leadoff double to the gap in right-center field and was brought around to score by Jett Walters on a base hit.

After a sacrifice bunt by Max Cash, a walk by Gabe Templeton and a strikeout, Wenkai Campbell singled to load the bases with two outs.

That made way for Cody Thomas to step up to the plate and send the second pitch of his at-bat over the left field fence for a go-ahead grand slam that gave Post 2 a 6-4 lead that they wouldn’t look back on.

Five more runs across the final three innings for Post 2 saw it out to an 11-4 lead heading to the top of the seventh. Milik gave way for Judd Messerly to finish the task with the final three outs. Berkeley managed two runs and cut the lead to 11-6 with runners on first and second with only one out.

Post 2 catcher Cash caught an attempted bunt out of the air and threw to first for the game-ending double play.

Post 2 will advance to play South Charleston Post at 7 p.m. tonight at P.O. Faulkner Park in Martinsburg.
