A look at campaign finances for area House of Delegates races

MORGANTOWN — Here’s a look at campaign finances for contested area House of Delegates races following the May primary and heading into the November general election. Numbers come from their 2nd Quarter reports, covering April 29-June 30. Some races have only one candidate on the ballot and are not covered here.

Monongalia County

78th District

Incumbent Republican Geno Chiarelli faces Democratic challenger Diane Gaston. Neither had a primary challenger.

Chiarelli raised $600 and spent $544 during the quarter, leaving a campaign account balance of $3,948.38 heading into the third quarter, which runs through Sept. 30 . His year-to-date totals were $5,100.51 raised and $1,152.13 spent.

Gaston raised $5,720 and spent $2,345.03, leaving $8,499.89. Her year-to-date totals were $8,780 raised and $5,321.26 spent. She lent her campaign $5,000.

80th District

Incumbent Democrat John Williams faces Republican challenger Summer Dawn Hartley. Neither had a primary challenger.

Williams received $21,745 in contributions during the quarter, plus $1,500 transferred from the accounts of two other Democratic delegates. He spent $825, leaving a balance of $36,663.70. His year-to-date totals were $42,344.20 raised and $5,680.50 spent. He donated $5,469.20 to his campaign.

Hartley received $8,958.45 during the quarter and spent $2,546.37, leaving $9,614.23. Her year-to-date totals were $19,901.64 raised and $17,285.08 spent. She donated $1,328.92 to her campaign and lent it $9,000.

82nd District

This is an open seat. Incumbent Republican Debbie Warner chose not to seek reelection. Republican David McCormick faces Democrat Bill Reger-Nash, who defeated Mai-Lyn Sadler in the primary.

McCormick received $7,819.25 and spent $1,453.57 during the quarter, leaving $82,674.93. His year-to-date totals were $116,377.66 raised and $31,730.86 spent. He donated $750 to his campaign and lent it $5,000, which he paid back.

Reger-Nash received $18,492.80 during the quarter and spent $8,317.09, leaving $19,366.35. His year-to-date totals were $35,767.80 raised and $16,341.33 spent. He donated $2,525 to his campaign.

Marion County

74th District

Republican incumbent Mike DeVault faces Democratic challenger Frankie Delapas. Neither had a primary opponent.

DeVault received only $25 in contributions during the quarter. He spent $185, leaving an account balance of $$6,588.78. His year-to-date totals were $6,873.78 raised and $285 spent. He donated $1,000 to his campaign.

Delapas raised nothing during the quarter and spent $873.74, leaving a balance of $626.26. His year-to-date totals were $1,500 raised and $873.74 spent.

75th District

Incumbent Republican Phil Mallow faces Democratic challenger Stephanie Tomana. Mallow defeated primary opponent David Kennedy. Tomana was unchallenged.

Mallow doesn’t have a 2nd Quarter report on file. He entered the quarter with a balance of $13,274.69 and had donated $250 to his campaign.

Tomana raised $984.50 during the quarter and spent $1,673.88, leaving a balance of $4,520.45. Her year-to-date totals were $7,715.50 raised and $3,164.49 spent.

76th District

This is an open seat. Incumbent Democrat Joey Garcia is running for state Senate 13th District, where he is unchallenged at this point.

Republican Jon Dodds faces Democrat Rick Garcia to fill the seat. Dodds defeated Toby Heaney in the primary. Garcia defeated Tom Mainella.

Dodds raised $2,900 and spent $1,042.24 during the quarter, leaving a balance of $2,030.13. His year-to-date totals were $5,519.95 raised and $3,490.22 spent. He donated $800 to his campaign.

Garcia’s three reports are confusing. His 1st Quarter report shows no contributions but a year-to-date total of $819.62. His primary report shows no opening balance but a single contribution, from himself, of $819.26, with a year-to-date total of $1,638.88. His 2nd Quarter report shows no contributions, no spending and no balance, but the same year-to-date total of $1,638.88.
