Mon Health, WVU Medicine receive top scores in several U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals rankings

MORGANTOWN — Mon Health Medical Center and WVU Medicine both received top honors in the annual U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals rankings.

J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital had the highest rating in four specialties and was ranked the No. 1 hospital in West Virginia.

Mon Health Medical Center received the highest rating — high performing — in two areas in the Procedures & Conditions category: Heart Failure and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

U.S. News said a hospital’s congestive heart failure score is based on multiple data categories, including patient outcomes, volume, advanced heart programs and more. Over 6,000 hospitals were evaluated and eligible hospitals received one of three ratings — high performing (1,088 hospitals), average (1,713 hospitals) or below average (1,202 hospitals) with the balance either not offering the service or treating too few patients to be rated. Hospitals that earned a high performing rating were significantly better than the national average.

A hospital’s COPD score is based on multiple data categories, including patient survival, discharging patients to home, nurse staffing and more. Of the 6,000 hospitals rated, 773 were high performing.

“We are honored to be rated as high-performing for heart failure and COPD by U.S News & World Report,” said Dr. Krystal Atkinson, chief administrative officer and chief nursing officer of Mon Health Medical Center and chief nursing executive of Mon Health System. “At Mon Health Medical Center, we are dedicated to providing excellent care, and this rating demonstrates that unwavering commitment. We are proud of our world-class clinical teams, as this rating would not have been possible without their tireless efforts to deliver the best in patient care.”

Mon Health’s Vandalia Health sister Charleston Area Medical Center was ranked No. 2 hospital in the state and was rated high performing in eight Procedures & Conditions: leukemia, lymphoma & myeloma; colon cancer surgery; lung cancer surgery; abdominal aortic aneurysm repair; heart failure; kidney failure; COPD; pneumonia.

Also, CAMC Greenbrier was rated high performing in pneumonia.
