STAR CITY — A fundraiser benefiting one of Star City’s finest is poised to show that Star City takes care of their own.
Following a breast cancer diagnosis, Star City Police Chief Jessica Colebank recently underwent surgery and is now beginning her road to recovery.
Colebank will be on extended medical leave and, according to Star City Mayor Sharon Doyle, that is one of the reasons they wanted to host a fundraiser, so she is able to take care of her financial needs and fully commit to her health.
The benefit, which Doyle said is being funded solely from donations, will be a homemade spaghetti dinner on Friday, July 26, from noon to 7 p.m. in Peace Hall at St. Mary Church on University Avenue in Star City.
Tickets will be $10 for adults and $5 for children 6 and under and will include spaghetti, meatballs, salad, bread, dessert and drink.
“Everything is homemade — the sauce, the meatballs, everything,” Doyle said. “And we have a lot of raffles — we have a TV, we have gift cards, we have gift baskets, just a nice variety of items from supporters.”
Doyle said one of the town’s part-time police officers was able to have a rifle donated with the goal of selling 1,000 tickets for $1 each — that’s already sold out.
“We just want everybody to come out and have a nice meal and help support Jess,” Doyle said. “She’s spent her career in law enforcement helping people and now we’re stepping up to help her.
“Jess is just one of these people, she’s in the role that she is for the right reasons. She just connects with people right away and you get that she cares, and she wants to help.”
If there is anyone who is unable to attend the event but wants to make a donation, they’re welcome to stop by Star City Town Hall, 370 Broadway Avenue, with cash or checks made payable to “Cure for the Chief.”
“A lot of people are going to see what happens when a small community rallies together to take care of one of our own,” Doyle said.
