Carol Howe Hamblen, 86, of Morgantown, died at Ruby Memorial Hospital on June 27, 2024.
She was born on June 28, 1937, in Boston, daughter of the late Robert Curtis Hamblen and the late Margaret Howe Hamblen.
Carol graduated from Wells College in Aurora, N.Y. with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and from West Virginia University in Morgantown with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. She also did graduate work in philosophy at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. As a certified public accountant, she was previously employed in the accounting and finance departments of University Health Associates and West Virginia University Hospitals, Inc.
During her retirement years, Carol enjoyed being a grandmother and staying abreast of her children’s lives. She delighted in creative writing classes, Pilates classes, playing the viola with Sunroom Strings, bicycling and walking with family and friends and their dogs and book club discussions. For several years she served as a literacy volunteer and community member of the WVU Council for Women’s Concerns.
Carol is survived by her husband of 64 years, Donald Loos Spencer; their daughter, Barbara Spencer Hawthorne and her two children, Drew Alexander Hawthorne and Kyle Benjamin Hawthorne; their son, Robert Hamblen Spencer and partner, David Arnold Ehrlich; their daughter, Donna Leigh Spencer; as well as their daughter, Lynn Margaret Spencer and her son, Caden Spencer Haines; her sister, Nancy Hamblen Benedict; her sister, Roberta Elizabeth Hamblen and her husband, Walter Andrew Popp; her brother-in-law, David Taylor Hucknall Spencer and his wife, Nancy Nelson Spencer; and many special nieces and nephews.
Smith Funeral & Cremation Care will arrange a conservation green burial for her family at Foxfield Preserve, a nature preserve cemetery located at The Wilderness Center in Wilmot, Ohio. Carol wished for a burial that is environmentally friendly and contributes to reforestation and natural restoration.
A memorial reception in Morgantown will be held at the Village of Heritage Point from 1-3 p.m. on Tuesday, July 2.
