Eloine Lucille Metheny, 95, of Bruceton Mills, passed away peacefully at home with her beloved family by her side on Wednesday, June 26, 2024.
Born Jan. 1, 1929, in Brookside, W.Va., Eloine was the oldest daughter of the late Guy and Myrtle Rumer.
She was a humble country girl, helping her parents around the house and playing with critters in the creek. She began working when she was just 12 years old. As a teenager, she went to a party where she met a handsome young man just returning from the war. “It was love at first sight.” On Dec. 14, 1946, she married that man, and “it was a very good 68 years. We loved each other very much ‘til the very end when his cancer took him” on July 3, 2015.
Eloine worked hard her entire life, enjoyed vacations with friends and family and was a caretaker for many. Known for her buckwheat cake breakfasts complete with all the fixin’s, family and friends far and wide would gather around her table daily to eat, talk, laugh and just be together. She was deeply devoted to her family, loving them with every ounce of her being while never hesitating to let them know when they were out of line.
The love Eloine instilled remains in the hearts of her children, Norma Ringer, Oren and Twyla Metheny, Glen and Robin Metheny and Joyce and Bob Shafer; her grandchildren, Joe and Amy Lewis, Brian Metheny, Christina and Allen Miller, Jaime and Percy Carr, Jared Metheny, Alicia and TJ Clark, Hillary and Koby Jenkins, Lester and Andrea Shafer, Harold and Summer Fearer and Christopher and Laura Metheny; 38 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren; siblings, Virginia Wilhelm and Lawrence Rumer; sisters-in-law, Carol Rumer and Zelmodine Casteel.
In addition to her parents, Eloine was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Junior Metheny; grandsons, Jeffrey Metheny, great-grandson Collin Casteel and Dakota Roach; son-in-law, Jack Ringer; sister, Ruby Casteel; brothers, Robert Rumer and Richard Rumer; sisters-in-law, Gerry Rumer, Darnice Rumer, Ethel Frantz and Eleanor Metheny; brothers-in-law, Elwood Wilhelm, Ivan Casteel, Kenneth Frantz, Chester Earl Metheny and Nelson Casteel.
Family and friends may call at the Carl R. Spear Funeral Home in Brandonville-Bruceton Mills, from 2-8 p.m. on Friday, June 28, and from 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 29, until the 2 p.m. service with Pastor Steve Wotring officiating. Burial will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Terra Alta.
