Thomas Swisher

Thomas “Tom” A. Swisher, 69, of Newburg, passed away at his residence with family and friends by his side on Saturday, June 22, 2024.  

He was born on Jan. 1, 1955, in Atlanta, son of the late Allen (Al) Keith Swisher and Margaret Leota (Boylen) Barker; stepmother, Kay Swisher, of Denver.  

Tom graduated from Grafton High School. He was a member of the CEC-The Gospel Lighthouse in Birds Creek, served on the Board, sang in the choir and loved mowing the grass at the church with Brenda.  

He enjoyed fishing, boating, camping, woodworking and working on chainsaws and weed eaters. He retired as a coal miner from White Tail.  

Tom is survived by his loving wife, Brenda Kay (Hawkins) Swisher, of Newburg; two children, Matthew Hovatter, of Arthurdale, and Chanda Kish, of Fla.; two grandchildren, Austin and Traytin Hovatter, of Arthurdale; two brothers, Lawrence Swisher (Melissa) Wheeling, Edward Swisher (Millie), of S.C.; two nieces, Hermiety Van Laar (Grant), Miranda Cox (Lucas); one nephew, Jebb Swisher (Kerrigan); two great-grandchildren, Gracie and Finley; two uncles, William Boylen, of Morgantown, Carl Boylen, of Arthurdale; one brother-in-law, Olaf Frank Hawkins Jr. (Ellen), of Newburg; three sisters-in-law, Becky Morrison, of Fla., Joyce Bolyard (Charles), of Newburg, and Debra Hawkins, of Newburg.  

In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by two sisters-in-law, Shirley Adams (Bill) and Janet Lipscomb; one brother-in-law, Jack Hawkins.  

Family and friends will be received at Bolyard Funeral Home, 79 Morgantown Ave., Newburg, W.Va., from 3-7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 26, and from 9 a.m. at the CEC-The Gospel Lighthouse at Birds Creek on Thursday, June 27 until time of service at 11 a.m. with Pastor Mike Matlick and Pastor Carl Trickett officiating. Interment will follow at the Bethlehem Cemetery, Dogtown Road.
