Virginia Liberatore Alexander, 96, of Morgantown, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family on June 20, 2024.
She was born May 30, 1928, at the family home, daughter of the late Damian “Danny” and Teresa Bologna Liberatore, Italian immigrants from Abruzzo, Italy.
The Liberatore family owned and operated the First Ward Confectionary grocery store.
She is survived by her children Michael (Sue) Alexander, Patrick (Oceania) Alexander, Paulette Culton, all from Morgantown, and Amy (Harry) Bracy of Columbia, S.C.; her grandchildren, Kristian Haines, Joshua (Stephanie) Alexander, Christopher (Caitlyn) Alexander, Samantha (Kevin) Salazar, Amanda Freels (Brad Heather), Angelo Soliveras, Emily (Paul) Lanphier, Annie Schenzel, Tyler (Jaclyn) Schenzel, Turner (Jade) Schenzel, Grant Culton (Rhianna), Garrett Culton, Bailey Colquitt and Sydney Colquitt, as well as 18 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 73-years, Emil Paul Alexander; their daughter, Theresa Alexander Schenzel; son-in-law, Tyler August Schenzel; son-in-law, Dean Culton; and her brothers, Mumfred “Mundy,” Mario (Mir) and Arthur Liberatore.
Virginia graduated from Morgantown High School in 1946 and worked in the family grocery store, where she occasionally made grocery deliveries to neighbors herself. She spent several years caring for her ailing mother and aunt. Virginia was always a caregiver at heart! She later joined WVU as the assistant to the dean in the Math Department. She finished her career at the WVU football office, where she found her second family through her love of football and WVU.
She was a member of the Red Hats Society and Catholic Daughters, loved traveling, attending WVU football games and traveling with the team to bowl games, and enjoyed playing LCR and “winning” her family’s money. She loved coupons and enjoyed a good sale! She usually had pizzelles in her purse for the special people in her life or for a good bribe!
Her most cherished role was that of wife and mother as she devoted her life to raising her five children. She was cooking or baking to show her love in that traditional Italian way … food! The first thing she would ask anyone who walked in her house was “Are you hungry, do you want something to eat?” Even asking, “Did he eat?” moments after Dad took his last breath.
Friends and family will be received at St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, 3346 University Ave., Morgantown, on Monday, June 24, from 2-6 p.m. and again on Tuesday, June 25, from 10 a.m. until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Father John McDonough as celebrant. A committal service will follow at Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens.
