Youth center aiming to become micro school

REEDSVILLE — A youth center in Preston County is growing and has plans to become a micro school.

Located in Valley Industrial Park, the Preston County Youth Center (PCYC) in Masontown, is a multi-use facility providing the youth a place to participant in sports and other activities.

Glenn Larew is the executive director of the faith-based facility that is sponsored by the Newburg Community Church.

The center is in a two-story, 20,000-square-foot building. Among its amenities is a 100-foot-by-100-foot garden that the children help plant and care for. It also has six basketball courts, three volleyball courts, bleachers for 180 people and a soccer field.

The center has six newly outfitted classrooms, 640 square feet each, two large bathrooms with shower stalls, and a large kitchen.

Director Sheila Scott said the center is currently doing an all-day program. She said when school is in, the center offers an after-school program.

“Well be starting a micro school in partnership with Laurel Academy in Terra Alta,” she said. Scott said the center averages 24 students per day, but has 50 enrolled. She said some of the students are on vacation or have appointments.

Anyone interested in donating to the center can mail a check to The Preston County Youth Center, P.O. Box 628 Reedsville, WV 26547; or stop by at 87 VIP Drive, Masontown. Phone 304-288-3259.
