Houston’s Santiago de la Fuente (Player), Texas’ Nathan Petronzio (Newcomer) and West Virginia’s Sean Covich (Coach) garnered the individual season honors while eight different member institutions had selections to the 2024 Men’s Golf All-Big 12 Team.
Texas and Texas Tech both earned two selections to the team while Baylor,Cincinnati, Houston, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and TCU garnered one selection.
Big 12 coaches voted for Coach of the Year while Clippd rankings determined the Player and Newcomer of the Year awards and the All-Big 12 Team.
The co-medalists of the Big 12 Championship were automatically selected to the team.
De la Fuente claims the first Big 12 Player of the Year honor for Houston after appearing in nine events this season. The senior wrapped up his 2023-24 campaign ranked No. 20 in the nation, the highest position of any Big 12 men’s golfers. The Guadalajara, Mexico native led the team with a 70.20 stroke average while he posted 20 rounds at par or better this season. De la Fuente was named to the 2024 Big 12 All-Tournament Team before helping the Cougars register a sixthplace finish at the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional.
Petronzio is the second consecutive and the 12th Longhorn to be named Newcomer of the Year. Joining the team after three seasons at SMU, he posted seven top-25 and four top-10 individual finishes this year. The Bee Cave, Texas native earned a selection to the Big 12 All-Tournament Team after tying for eighth before he posted his season-best No. 2 finish at the NCAA Austin Regional. Petronzio had a stroke average of 71.66 while he shot 19 of 32 rounds at par or better.
Covich secured his first Coach of the Year honor after leading West Virginia to its second NCAA Championship appearance (1947) and its second NCAA Regional appearance after being named head coach when the program was reinstated in 2014. The Mountaineers posted their best finish (fifth place) at the Big 12 Championship before securing the program’s second NCAA Regional berth in the last five postseasons.
At the NCAA Rancho Santa Fe Regionals, the team tied for third to advance the program to its first NCAA Championship since regionals were implemented in 1989.
WVU ended its season recording a program-best 28th-place finish at the NCAA Championship.
