The Morgantown Post 2 Senior Legion baseball team returned to Dale Miller Field Saturday for day two of the WAJR Wooden Bat Classic with a pair of matchups with Charleston Post 65 and Berkeley County Post 14.
Post 2 (2-1) went 1-1 on the day with a 6-2 victory over Charleston in the afternoon before falling
6-1 to Berkeley County in the nightcap.
In the earlier victory over Post 65, six batters produced Morgantown’s seven hits that scored six runs.
For the second time in the first three games of the season, Post 2 allowed a six-run inning that stemmed from some pitching woes against Post 14.
“I thought we were a little flat today in both games,” Post 2 head coach Andy Altemus said. It’s going to be like that sometimes; yesterday was the opposite. In the second game, we didn’t have good at-bats at all. In the first game, we left some guys on base. Walks got us in trouble again today, like they did yesterday. We need to come out and be ready to
compete.”
Cody Thomas led Post 2 in the day’s opening game against Charleston with a pair of hits, including a solo shot to left in the bottom of the sixth.
Starter Hunter Dakan went six innings, giving up only four hits and two runs with eight strikeouts to earn his first win of the summer.
Tommy Montague followed a two-hit performance on Friday with two more across the two games on Saturday.
“Tommy is just naturally a good hitter,” Altemus said. “He also just loves to play baseball, and I know playing for this team is something he looks forward to every year.”
In the closing game between Berkeley County and Morgantown, an old-fashioned pitcher’s duel between Post 2’s Mason Chaney and Post 14’s Caleb Fletcher dominated the first four-and-a-half innings.
Post 2 broke through in the bottom of the fifth with two singles and a two-out walk. With the bases loaded, Gunner Riley singled home Parker Jefferies for a 1-0 lead.
Chaney was relieved to begin the top of the sixth inning by Judd Messerly after giving up only two hits over five shutout innings.
Three walks and a hit batter tied the game at one for Berkeley, followed by a wild pitch and sacrifice fly that saw Post 2 fall behind 3-1.
Two errors in the infield gave Post 14 two more runs before a single brought home the sixth of the inning, growing the lead to 6-1. Berkeley County scores its six runs on one hit in the sixth inning.
The two teams will turn around and play again this afternoon at 2:00 p.m. back at Dale Miller Field to continue the Wooden Bat Classic.
“They’re a good team, and they beat us twice last year to win the state tournament,” Altemus said. “We even see them two more times this year before the end of the summer. We just need to have better at-bats and be ready to go.”
