Valerie Elizabeth White (formerly Hershman-Weiland), 89, joined her Lord and Savior and all her beloved family and friends preceding her in death, on May 25, 2024, after a brief hospital admission.
She was born in Morgantown on July 31, 1935, the daughter of Orval and Thelma Hershman.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandmother, Elizabeth Hess; two brothers, Harley Hershman and Richard Hershman; her favorite uncle, William White; and her favorite aunts, Laura White and Geraldine Fuller.
Valerie is survived by a son, Jeffrey Weiland; a daughter, Erica McCord; a sister, Carol Jean Peterson and her husband, Ron; a granddaughter, Ashley Weiland; a niece; numerous nephews; and her three grandcats, Spunky, Precious and Tabitha.
Valerie attended and graduated from Morgantown High School in 1953. Thereafter, she married her first husband, Chris A. Weiland, who served in the military for 27 years, which provided her with an opportunity to travel the country and beyond. Her last job was as a door greeter at Walmart, where she worked for 25 years, finally retiring in 2019.
Valerie loved traditional country and gospel music and was a believer in Jesus Christ. She had a beautiful songbird voice and often sang karaoke at home. In her later years, she enjoyed dining at the senior center, taking park walks, watching wildlife in her wooded backyard and taking trips to Maryland to her favorite candy store and restaurant.
Valerie will be sadly missed by her children and all those who were blessed to have known her and her beautiful smile and huge heart (the latter of which eventually failed her).
Per Valerie’s wishes, she will be cremated with no funeral service.
Smith Funeral & Cremation Care and SFCC Crematory of Westover/Morgantown, is providing compassionate professional service to the White family.
In lieu of flowers, Valerie would have requested that donations be made to one of the following organizations that she regularly supported over the years: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and/or ASCPA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals).
