MORGANTOWN — In Morgantown’s final tune-up games before its regional series against Bridgeport, the Mohigans swept a doubleheader against Philip Barbour and South Harrison on Thursday.
MHS defeated the Colts 6-2 in the first game and topped the Eagles 10-0 in the nightcap.
“Tonight was an opportunity to get as many pitchers on the night as we could, get as many bats as we could and defensively get our reps in,” MHS coach Pat Sherald said.” I’m really proud of their effort. We were able to run two different lineups primarily.”
Morgantown High came out strong against Philip Barbour in the first inning scoring two runs, and continued the lead throughout the game. Morgantown struggled in three innings scoring zero runs and allowing Philip Barbour to score two runs during that time.
Morgantown picked back up their momentum and scored a total of six runs and won the game 6-2.
In the second game against South Harrison, Morgantown came out ready to play, scoring five runs in the first inning and continued the success throughout the game. South Harrison was struggling trying to keep up with Koa Silvers who scored two runs in total, one in the first inning and the other in the second inning. He finished 3-4 with three singles.
MHS starter Tristan Milik threw three perfect innings against SH, striking out four.
Coach Sherald utilized all his players tonight, giving them all the opportunities to improve their game before their big game Monday against Bridgeport High School.
Earlier this season, the Mohigans competed against Bridgeport and fell short with a score of 13-3 on the road.
“It’s going to be a challenge, but our boys are up for the challenge,” Sherald said.
Bridgeport High School is no stranger to regionals and MHS needs to keep its energy up to play on Monday.
“Our biggest thing we talk about all year is about focusing on our dugout,” Sherald said.
MHS was in the regional last year against University High School and fell short in three games. This year, MHS is looking to make a comeback against Bridgeport and move on to the state tournament.
The Indians went 31-4 and the Mohigans went 27-7 this season. Last season Bridgeport did not make the state tournament in several years.
“Obviously Bridgeport will be a very well-coached team,” Sherald said. “Constantly have a good feeder system of great players coming through and they just play hard.
“It’s a community that takes a lot of pride in baseball”.
The best-of-three regional series will begin at Bridgeport on Monday at 5:30 p.m. Morgantown will host game two on Tuesday at Mylan Park at 5:30 p.m. The if-needed game three will be back at Bridgeport on Wednesday.
