KINGWOOD — Three executive sessions, two for personnel and one to discuss the county’s IT contract, ended in no action taken at the recent Preston County Commission meeting.
Following the first executive session, seven Preston High School students — Brooke Casteel, Julia Phillips, Tristan Smith, Isabelle Hauser, Taryn Veltry Sophia Saurino and Gabrielle Saurino — performed a skit about the pros and cons of drinking and using raw milk. The students are members of Future Farmers of America (FFA).
The presentation explained the main difference between raw and pasteurized milk is that raw milk has no additives and has not been heated. It is just as it comes from the cow. Pasteurized milk has been heat-treated to remove nearly all bacteria and pathogens and is considered safer. Raw milk also has full-fat content while
pasteurized milk doesn’t.
In other business, commissioners discussed working with North Central West Virginia Community Action Association (NCWVCAA) to find a spot for two trailers and some vehicles that are parked in the county parking lot at the end of the street.
Commissioner Hunter Thomas said NCWVCAA does a lot of good for the county and needs a place for its trailers. He said when court is in session, Price Street is filled with cars, as is the parking lot beside the Family Resource Center. The organization is on Price Street.
Two of the many programs NCWVCAA offers are the Weatherization Assistance Program that helps reduce heating and cooling costs for low income families, the elderly and people with disabilities and its Veteran Services Program that improves housing stability for low income veteran families.
“Lets find a solution that works for everyone,” Commissioner Samantha Stone said.
No further action was taken.
Commissioners unanimously approved County Clerk Linda Huggins’ request for the appointment of Tammy Johnson as the Republican Emergency Ballot Commissioner and Ashley Cole as the Democrat Emergency Ballot Commissioner, effective immediately and ending Dec. 21, 2025.
County Administrator Nathan Raybeck announced the next week’s commission meeting will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, with the next meeting to be held at 9:30 a.m. May 20, followed by the Primary Election 2024 Board of Canvassers at 10:45 a.m. There will be no meeting the week of June 10-14.
