Sarah Mills

Sarah “Sally” Elliott Mills, 93, of Mannington, and more recently of Morgantown, passed away at her residence on Friday, May 3, 2024.

She was born on May 19, 1930, in Mannington, the daughter of the late Samuel Nelson “Doc” Elliott Sr. and Florence Ryan Elliott.

Sally was preceded in death in 2011 by her husband of 51 years, Ollie J. Mills.

She is survived by her son, Dr. James D. Mills, of Morgantown, and her daughter and son-in-law, Drs. Jennifer and Brent Cardwell, of Austin, Texas. In addition to her children, Sally is survived by the joy of her life – her six grandchildren, Madison, Drew, Sarah and Shaley Mills, of York, Pa., and Grace and McKenna Cardwell, of Austin, Texas. Sally is also survived by her sister, Phoebia Dickinson, of Chesapeake, Va.; two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Lee Elliott, of Monongah, W.Va., and Janice Elliott, of Chesapeake, Va.; and by hundreds of beloved nieces and nephews.

Sally was a 1948 graduate of Mannington High School and worked for 25 years at Westinghouse Electric in Fairmont. Those who crossed paths with her know that she had a zest for life. In the tradition of her family, she was a master storyteller – weaving captivating stories with her own unique flair. She never met a stranger and left many with treasures to cherish.

Sally attended St. Patrick Church in Mannington for 86 years, where she was baptized, confirmed and married and was an active member of the Alter & Rosary Society. In 2016, Sally moved to Morgantown, becoming a resident at Heritage Point. There, she made many new friends who brought laughter and love to the close of her life.

The family would like to thank the Bridge Clubs in Mannington and at Heritage Point for bringing great joy to Sally’s life. Special thanks to her caregivers, including the wonderful nurses and aids of WVU Hospice and Home Instead who have provided exceptional care to her over the past several months. Thanks also to Dottie Bryant and Ariel Strauss for their personal care, and special thanks to Sally’s beloved nieces, especially Molly Kilcoyne-Delaney and Sara Gonzales Locke for their seemingly endless love and compassion.
