Volunteers began planting thousands of red spruce trees near Cranesville in Preston County Friday.
They will continue today. This two-day event is part of an annual Earth Month celebration hosted by The Nature Conservancy.
April 22 was Earth Day.
April is Earth Month, a time to celebrate the planet and take action to protect it. Earth Day, which is celebrated annually on April 22, is the largest civic event in the world, with over a billion people participating each year, according to sustain.life.com.
The central Appalachians have lost as much as 90% of their original red spruce forests, but for the past 22 years local volunteers have helped replant them on both the West Virginia and Maryland sides of the Cranesville Swamp Preserve, according to information provided by The Nature Conservancy.
This year volunteers are focused on the West Virginia side.
