Ruby Brookover

Ruby Helen Brookover, 100, of Jakes Run, died Friday, April 26, 2024, at her home on Jakes Run.

She was born Oct. 18, 1923, at Mooresville, a daughter of the late Arthur and Ossie Cross.

During World War II, she married Donald Ray Brookover. As a wartime bride, she worked in Akron, Ohio while her husband served in the United States Army. She was a member of the Jakes Run Assembly of God Church where she led songs and taught Sunday school for several years.

She enjoyed reading novels and had a ceramic frog collection that was a source of lighthearted pleasure. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed long walks on country roads with her granddaughter and great-grandson, as she spent several years lovingly engaged in their caregiving. They spent many hours feeding the fish from the bridge above Jakes Run Creek.

In recent months, she enjoyed going to town for lunch with her son, Gary, twice a week, as late as April 14. She traveled among several restaurants looking for the best French fries, sandwiches and brownies. She was admired as a great cook, even helping prepare the family Christmas dinner at the age of 100. Nothing made her happier than celebrating holidays and many special occasions with family.

Surviving are two sons, Gary Ray Brookover and Gene Louis Brookover and his wife, Ginger; one granddaughter, Laurie Burks (Aaron Graves); one great-grandson, Lucas Cozort; a beloved sister-in-law, Helen Tennant Ferringer; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her mother, father and husband.

The family wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude to the hospice nurses and aides, as well as Debbie Simms for comforting care and assistance to the grandma who spent her life caring for others.

A graveside service will be held at the St. Luke Cemetery in Mooresville, WV at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30, with Pastor Rob Bennett officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Luke Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Women’s Ministry, Jakes Run Assembly of God, 1383 Jakes Run Road, Fairview, WV 26570.

The Owen-Neely Funeral Home in Blacksville is in charge of arrangements.
