Mary Nuce Stultz, of Kingwood, formerly of Romney, passed away at New Horizon Senior Living Center, Inc., Kingwood, on April 13, 2024.
She was born in the Pleasantdale area on April 22, 1927, the daughter of the late John Nelson Nuce and Jessie Nicholson Nuce.
She was preceded in death by her late husband, C.W.W. (Bill) Stultz on July 29, 2004, whom she married on July 23, 1968.
Mary graduated from Kingwood High School in 1945. She continued her education at Potomac State College in Keyser and West Virginia University, receiving a bachelor’s degree in home economics education and a master’s degree in home economics education. She continued her studies in extension courses at the University of Maryland and the University of Tennessee in human development.
She was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church and numerous professional organizations. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International for Key Women Educators and served as treasurer for Alpha Kappa Chapter in WV. She was recognized by the International President for 55 years as a dedicated and loyal member.
Mary began her teaching career at Elk Garden High School in Mineral County, then Fort Hill High School in Allegheny County, Md. She then went to Frederick County, Md., as supervisor in home economics education, later to become the Maryland state advisor for the Future Homemakers of America. She also became the Maryland state supervisor for home economic education. Mary was elected for a two-year term as chairman of the National Advisory Board for the National Association of Future Homemakers of America. She was also recognized by the Kingwood Rotary Club when she received a Paul Harris Fellowship.
Mary and her husband, Bill, had many interests and kept very busy after “so-called retirement.” The project they both enjoyed very much was designing and building Farmer’s Home Administration housing for the elderly and disabled, namely in Romney, Fort Ashby, Mount Storm and Wardensville.
Throughout Mary’s life, her joy was found with family, friends and the FHA Girls and her ability to make her and others’ environment a more pleasant place to live. “I enjoy making things pretty.”
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Lawrence A. Nuce, Kingwood, Clarence Boone Nuce, Rockville, Md., Elmer L. Nuce, Kingwood, Lloyd G. Nuce, Masontown, W.Va.; and two sisters, Ruby Nuce (infant) and Geneieve Schleigh, Oakland, Md.
She is survived by a sister, Pauline A. Taylor, Masontown, W.Va.; nieces and nephews, Karen Sue (Charles W. “Pete”) Hendershot, Betsy (Bruce) Castle, Joy (Tom) Mroz, Elaine (Marvin) Snyder, Carolyn Germaine, Barbara (John) Carr, Gina (Frank) Petak, Eric Taylor, Douglas (Danie) Snyder, Larry (Linda) Nuce, John (Kandy) Nuce, Michael (Polly) Nuce, Daniel (C. J. SanJulian) Nuce, Don (Mary Ann) Nuce, Steve Nuce, David (Carol) Thomas, Paul (Linda) Thomas and several great and great-great-nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the owners and staff of New Horizon for their dedicated, loving and excellent care of Mary. Their smiles and tender care meant so much to her. Not only was Mary called “Aunt Mary” by her family, but she was also known as “Aunt Mary” to many others.
Friends may call the Kingwood Funeral Home, 295 S. Price St., Kingwood, WV 26537, from 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 24, until the funeral hour at 11 a.m., with Reverend Jonathan Nettles officiating. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. at Philos Cemetery, Philos Ave., Westernport, MD.
