Nancy Ann Stout passed away in Morgantown on April 13, 2024, at the age of 69.
Born in Philadelphia on Jan. 15, 1955, Nancy’s parents were Benjamin M. Stout Jr., M.D., and Ann Louise (Savage) Stout.
After graduating from Morgantown High, she attended West Virginia University, teaching English as a foreign language in Medellin, Columbia, one summer and earning a bachelor’s degree, cum laude, in sociology and Spanish in 1976. WVU degrees followed in 1978, an M.A., medical sociology, and in 1985, an E.D., quantitative methods in educational psychology. While working on her E.D. degree, Nancy held various positions as a research assistant in the WVU Department of Resource Management and published several papers in that field.
In 1985, Nancy joined the data analysis section of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), part of the U.S. CDC in Morgantown, as a health statistician. From that date through 1996, she held various research and supervisory positions at NIOSH. In 1997, Nancy was appointed director of the NIOSH Division of Safety Research and held that position for 14 years until her retirement in 2011.
In her professional roles, Nancy traveled throughout the world and spent six months in Sydney and Adelaide, Australia at the Australian counterpart to NIOSH. She held memberships and participated in activities of more than 12 professional organizations and received several federal agency awards for her distinguished service and commitment to her projects. Nancy was the author or coauthor on 95 technical papers published during her various positions.
Nancy was active in family functions, including vacations at Topsail Beach, N.C., and Deep Creek Lake, Md. The family and friends also enjoyed many days at the family camp near the Sinks of Gandy, which family members built using plans provided by Nancy. Hiking, cross-country skiing and enjoying nature at the camp were some of her greatest pleasures and opportunities to share time with her yellow labrador retriever, Carley. She especially enjoyed her times with her three nephews and had close relationships with them. Her outdoor interests included landscaping her yard and gardens and observing the wildlife in them. Travel was a joy for Nancy, and she went to many countries in Europe, South America, Africa, Iceland and the Caribbean.
She was an active member of the Cheat Lake Rotary Club and organized many fundraising activities, especially those involving Cheat Lake, where she had a boat for many years, enjoying the other members of the boating community. She was involved in working with Christian Help, participating in the children’s Christmas toy drive for many years.
Nancy was preceded in death by her father, Benjamin M. Stout Jr., M.D., and her brother, Dr. Benjamin M. Stout III.
She is survived by her mother, Ann Stout Walters; stepfather, Richard E. Walters; brothers, James S. Stout and Robert T. Stout (Jodie); nephews, Benjamin M. Stout IV (Hannah), Robert K. Stout and William A. Stout. Also surviving are stepbrothers, Mark A. and Lewis Craig Walters (Brenda); stepsister, Beth Walters Barkovich; stepnephews, Jameson and Jarrett Walters and Alex Barkovich; and stepniece, Brianna Barkovich.
Friends and family will be received at Wesley United Methodist Church, 503 High St., Morgantown, from 1 p.m. until the time of the Celebration of Life at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17.
