The West Virginia Farmers Market Association, in partnership with the West Virginia Food and Farm Coalition and the USDA Transition to Organic Partnership Program, announces the upcoming Transition to Organic Production (TOPP) In-Person Workshop in Morgantown.
TOPP is a component of the USDA’s comprehensive strategy to empower farmers and producers in their journey toward organic certification and sustainable agriculture.
The USDA’s commitment of $300 million underscores a strategic push to invigorate the organic sector. This investment aims to counter the decline in transitions to organic farming observed since 2008, creating lucrative market opportunities and enhancing income avenues for farmers through organic production.
The TOPP In-Person Workshop will provide support through practical training, connection with mentorship and financial assistance for certification. The curriculum is designed to cover all facets of organic farming, including certification processes, organic practices, pest management and organic product marketing. Boxed lunches will be provided.
The workshop, which will take place from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Monongalia Conservation District Office at 201 Scott Ave., Morgantown, features Katie Brownell from Red Hawk Rise Organic Farm in Harpers Ferry.
The West Virginia Farmers Market Association (WVFMA) is a statewide membership-based organization designed to strengthen farmers’ markets and enhance their surrounding communities. The WVFMA provides resources and technical assistance to farmers’ markets throughout the state. In synergy with the West Virginia Food and Farm Coalition, these organizations are advancing local food systems and organic farming initiatives. The USDA’s Transition to Organic Partnership Program further solidifies this mission, providing targeted support for farmers in their organic journey.
