Monongalia County was awarded $36,527 from the Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) for Phase 41.
Nonprofit organizations that serve residents of Mon County in the areas of shelter, food, and rental/mortgage/utility assistance are eligible to apply. The application for funding is due by 5 p.m. April 16.
The application is available at unitedwaympc.org/efsf-application.
The federal funds were made available through the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)/Federal Emergency Management Agency under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program. Funding totals for Mon County are determined by the national board, which consists of representatives from The Salvation Army; American Red Cross; Jewish Communities; Catholic Charities, USA; National Council of Churches of Christ in the U.S.A.; and United Way Worldwide.
The United Way of Monongalia and Preston Counties manages the National Emergency Food and Shelter Program for this area each year, and a local emergency food and shelter board decides on which agencies will get funding.
The local board is responsible for recommending agencies to receive these funds and any additional funds available under this phase of the program. The priorities (starting with highest priority) for Phase 41 are:
1) Other shelter, rent/mortgage
2) Utilities
3) Other food
4) Served meals
5) Supplies/equipment
6) Building code repairs/accessibility improvements.
