Maxine Wise

Maxine Elaine (Beall) Wise, 101, passed away peacefully on April 2, 2024.

Born Dec. 8, 1922, in Morgantown, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Kathryn Beall.

She was a lifelong member of the Harner Chapel United Methodist Church. She enjoyed singing in the choir, and as part of the United Methodist Women, she helped to prepare countless church dinners, organize fundraisers and serve her community in countless ways. Her commitment to church and community continued even past the days when she was able to help, and her phone line was constantly busy with continued connections to friends and family.

She enjoyed cooking, baking and family dinners, and lived her whole life on her family’s farm. She loved gardening and tending to her flowers, and sipping iced tea and snacking on chocolate, but perhaps her greatest joy was spending time with her family whenever she could, especially her three great-grandsons.

Maxine was a devoted wife, sharing 63 years of marriage with her late husband Carl, who preceded her in death on Aug. 12, 2011.

She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Left behind to cherish her memory are sons Alan (Mary Beth) Wise, and Mark (Linda) Wise, of Morgantown. Granddaughter Ashley (Isaac) Burns of Wake Forest, N.C.; grandson Ryan (Olivia) Wise of Baltimore, Md.; great-grandsons Silas and Theo Burns and Carson Wise. Also surviving are nephew Jim Prince of Lafayette, La., and niece Jeanne Gilbert of Indianapolis, Ind., and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Maxine was also preceded in death by her sisters and spouses. Martha and Paul Shay and Margaret and Brice Prince.

Friends and family will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., Morgantown, on Friday, April 5, from 4-7 p.m. Mrs. Wise will be moved to Harner Chapel United Methodist Church, 100 Luckey Lane, Morgantown, where she will lie in repose from 10-11 a.m. The funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. with Pastor Pamela Todd and Pastor Dan Meadows officiating. A graveside service will follow at Lawnwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in her name to Harner Chapel United Methodist Church, 100 Luckey Lane, Morgantown, WV 26501.

Hastings Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
