Prep Roundup: Kooper Statler throws no-hitter for Clay-Battelle

PADEN CITY — Sophomore Kooper Statler pitched a gem for the Cee-Bees, completing a seven-inning no-hitter with 13 strikeouts in a 3-0 win at Paden City. 

Statler only allowed three baserunners on a walk, hit-by-pitch and an error. The runner who walked was thrown out at third and Stateler picked the hit batter off first.

Statler also got it done at the plate, hitting a two-run double in the top of the first inning. Cayden Strosnider doubled to score Cam Mercer in the top of the seventh.

Clay-Battelle plays a doubleheader at Oak Glen on Saturday beginning at noon.

Parkersburg South 15, University 10

PARKERSBURG — The Hawks suffered their first loss of the season, 15-10, at Parkersburg South on Thursday. The Patriots scored eight runs in the bottom of the sixth to come back from a 10-7 deficit.

Daniel Grabo had three hits and an RBI, Max Cash, Madon McDonald, Mason Chaney and Brance McCune all had two hits.

Lewis County 6, Preston 2

WESTON — Preston baseball fell on the road Thursday, 6-2, at Lewis County.

Robbie Rowe had a hit and both RBI for the Knights (0-2). Brady McNew and Bryson McNew had the team’s other two hits.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

University 11, Linsly 1
(Wednesday)

MORGANTOWN — The University boys’ lacrosse team captured a commanding victory over visiting Linsly on Wednesday, 11-1 at Mylan Pharmaceuticals Stadium.

A balanced offensive attack saw six Hawks score goals, led by hat tricks by seniors Connor Montgomery and Aidan Murray. Montgomery and sophomore Maxwell Walker had two assists each.

The UHS defense led by senior Aiden Keeley and juniors Max Travis and Josh Brunner held the Cadets to just nine shots. Sophomore goalie James Robbins made eight saves.

UHS next plays Tuesday at Wheeling Central at 6 p.m.

Morgantown 16, Wheeling Central 4
(Wednesday)

MORGANTOWN — The Morgantown boys’ lacrosse team dominated a matchup with visiting Wheeling Central, 16-4, Wednesday night.

Wyatt Kozel led the Mohigans (3-0) with four goals and two assists. Nate Kupec had a pair of goals and seven assists. Luke Quigley and Nathan Lindsay both scored two goals.

MHS will play a road doubleheader on Saturday. The Mohigans play at noon at Martinsburg and at 3:30 p.m. at Hedgesville.

SOFTBALL

Clay-Battelle 19, Paden City 6

PADEN CITY — Jeremy Doshen picked up his first win as a head coach as his Cee-Bees blasted Paden City 19-6 on Thursday.

Savannah Doshen led the Cee-Bees’ offense with a pair of doubles and four RBI. Elyse Moore and Abigail Price both collected three hits and scored twice. Kenly Statler and Peyton Whittaker each drove in a run.

The Cee-Bees had 14 hits and walked six times as a team.

Price pitched five innings on the mound, striking out five.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Morgantown 5, Oak Glen 2

MORGANTOWN — The Morgantown High girls’ tennis team has opened the season 2-0, topping OVAC opponent Oak Glen 5-2 on Thursday.

The Mohigans picked up singles wins from Maya Greelee (8-1), Natalia Cassim (8-1) and Grace Forman (8-1).

In doubles, Greenlee paired with Anika Chadha to win 8-4 and Cassim and Forman teamed up to win 8-2.
