MORGANTOWN — Morgantown City Council conducted its first meeting in Monongalia County Commission Chambers on July 19, 2022.
After nearly two years as the county’s guest, council is eager to once again conduct city business in Morgantown City Hall.
Assistant City Manager Emily Muzzarelli said she has informed the commission that the city’s use of the Monongalia County Courthouse for public meetings will end by May 1.
“If we can get you in sooner, we will, but that’s the date that we’ve given them,” Muzzarelli recently told members of council.
The move from Spruce to High was made necessary by a $3.3 million overhaul of Morgantown City Hall, constructed at 389 Spruce Street 100 years ago this year.
While the project preserved and restored the building’s historic facade, the structure has been updated internally to make the facility more secure and comfortable for both visitors and city employees.
Outside of public meetings, the city has conducted all its business in the Spruce Center, at 430 Spruce Street, since city hall’s closure.
“Our staff is anxiously awaiting moving back,” Muzzarelli said.
Mayor Jenny Selin said members of council and the city’s boards and commissions are as well.
“We really do appreciate it here,” she said of the commission chamber. “It’s just nice to have your own digs.”
