Prep Roundup: Trinity softball tops Preston for 5th straight win to begin season

KINGWOOD — The Warriors continue to win, this time against a Class AAA opponent, defeating Preston 14-8 Wednesday in Kingwood.

Paige Hopkins led Trinity Christian (5-0) with four hits, a pair of doubles, an RBI and three runs scored while Peyton Moore and Hannah Titus each had three hits and three RBI. Titus also hit a pair of doubles. Arlie Humphreys and Lydia Knight had two RBI each.

Jillian Conn allowed eight runs, three earned, in the circle on five hits and six walks while striking out 13.

Preston was led by Myla Wotring and Ava Thistlewaite who each drove in three runs. Wotring hit a double and Thistlewaite had a triple.

Trinity will play a doubleheader against Bridgeport (Oh.) on Saturday.

University 15, Bridgeport 0

MORGANTOWN — The Hawks have scored 43 runs through four games this season, defeating visiting Bridgeport 15-0 in three innings on Wednesday.

Ashlyn Weaver had two hits, a triple, and drove in four runs. Kelsie Park had three RBI and Ally Jansen drove in two. Maddie Campbell collected two this, a double, and an RBI while striking out four in the circle.

UHS hosts Parkersburg South on Friday.

John Marshall 6, Morgantown 4

GLEN DALE — A three-run bottom of the sixth lifted John Marshall over visiting Morgantown on Wednesday.

The Monarchs hit two home runs in the frame to give them the lead, a two-run bomb by Reese Ward and a solo shot from Ava Blake.

Maddie Wismon homered for the Monarchs, a two-run home run in the top of the sixth that put MHS up 4-3 at the time.

Emily Peterson and Beth Robinson had the other RBI for the Mohigans. Kate Larimer and Paige Rhodes each hit a double.

Wisman allowed six runs in 5.1 innings in the circle while striking out four.

Morgantown travels to Bridgeport on Friday.

BASEBALL

University 11, Wheeling Park 3

WHEELING — For the second time in seven days, the University baseball team beat Wheeling Park 11-3. The Hawks won on the road Wednesday, repeating the same outcome they achieved last week at home.

Brodee Latocha led the Hawks (4-0) with four hits from the leadoff spot with a double and three RBI. Mason Chaney had three hits, a double and two RBI, Wenkai Campbell had two hits, a double, and two RBI and Bro McDonough had a hit and two RBI.

Daniel Grabo started on the mound, allowing three runs, one earned, on three hits and two walks while striking out three. Latocha pitched the final two innings without allowing a hit or run.

University travels to Parkersburg South today at 5 p.m.

Jefferson-Morgan (Pa.) 4, Trinity Christian 1

JEFFERSON, Pa. — Trinity Christian fell on the road Wednesday, 4-1 to Jefferson-Morgan (Pa.).

The Warriors were one-hit in the game but were tied 1-1 through the top of the fifth. A three-spot in the bottom of the fifth was the difference for the victorious Rockets.

Will McPherson had an RBI groundout in the top of the second to tie the game. Thomas Dinkel had the Warriors’ lone hit.

Brock Shuba started on the mound and pitched three innings of one-run ball, striking out eight. Sam Fulk took the loss, allowing three runs in three innings.

Trinity will host Paden City on Dale Miller field Saturday at noon.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Morgantown 7, Wheeling Park 0

MORGANTOWN — The Morgantown boys’ tennis team began its season with a clean sweep of Wheeling Park on Wednesday.

The Mohigans’ individual winners were Wyatt Abbitt (8-2), Max Chen (8-2), Solas Chhin-Kreiner (8-3) and Larry Du (8-2). in doubles, Abbitt and Chen won 8-2, Tian and Chhin-Kreiner won 8-1 and Max Warner and Ronan Rogers won 8-0.

Morgantown takes on rival University on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Morgantown 4, Wheeling Park 3

MORGANTOWN — The Morgantown High girls’ tennis team opened the season with a win on Wednesday, defeating Wheeling Park 4-3 at Marilla Park.

The teams split singles play, with Morgantown’s Anika Chadha winning 8-2 and Natalia Cassim prevailing  8-2. 

The Patriots took the top-flight doubles match and Morgantown’s Tina Chen and Joyce Hu won (8-1) in third doubles.

The deciding match was a very competitive second doubles matchup between Morgantown’s Cassim and Grace Forman and Wheeling Park’s Harper Moores and Reese Moores. Cassim and Forman prevailed 9-7 to give the Mohigans the overall victory over their regional opponent.

MHS is back in action against Oak Glen today.
