MORGANTOWN — University was red-hot in the first half and ice-cold in the second as the Hawks hung on to defeat visiting Parkersburg South 85-81 in an OVAC consolation match Tuesday.
UHS (8-9) scored 51 points in the first half, shooting 22-33 from the field and 6-10 from beyond the arch.
After leading by 17 at the break, the Hawks pushed their lead to 23 in the third quarter before cooling off considerably.
Four straight unforced UHS turnovers and Parkersburg South conversions helped the Patriots back into the game as they cut the lead as close as four.
In the end, UHS was able to make its free throws down the stretch to hang on for the win.
UHS had six players in double figures, led by John Coleman’s 18 points. Carson Ford scored 13 of his 16 points in the first half. James Fortney-Garbart also scored 16 while Ethan Jackson had 13, Luke Hudson scored 12 and Zach Demidovich finished with 10.
UHS travels to Wheeling on Thursday for another OVAC consolation match against undefeated Linsly.

Robert C. Byrd 40, Preston 39
KINGWOOD — Carleigh Curotz’s three-pointer with 15 seconds left gave Class AAA No. 10 Robert C. Byrd a one-point, 40-39, win over Preston Tuesday night.
Neither team led by more than six in the back-and-forth contest. RCB (11-6) led by five with three minutes to play.
Prerston’s Bella Miller made two three-pointers to put the Knights (10-10) ahead 35-34. The teams traded baskets and Preston made two foul shots to lead 39-37 before Curotz’s game-winner.
Cameryn Sypolt led Preston with 14 points while Miller and Kendra Nazelrod each finished with eight.
Curotz had 16 for RCB, tied with Martina Howe for the team lead.
