WELLSBURG — The Region 1 swimming championships were held at Brooke High Saturday as three swimmers from Morgantown and one from University earned spots on the All-Region team. The All-Region teams are made up of the top six individual point-scorers for the boys and girls.
Morgnatown’s Delaney Housholder tied for first among the girls with 18 total points, winning the 200 IM and 500 freestyle. Teammate Lillian Linscheid finished in a tie for third with 16 points, winning the 200 freestyle and finishing second in the 500 freestyle.
The MHS girls won the regional team title with a score of 102, ahead of second-place Brooke’s 99. University finished in fifth with 49 points.
For the boys, Morgantown’s Christian Hammer also tied for first place with 18 total points, winning the 500 freestyle and 100 butterfly. University’s Nathaniel Lindsay tied for fifth with 14 points, finishing second in the 100 freestyle and 200 IM.
The Morgantown boys finished fourth in the team standings with 72 points. University finished in sixth with 36 points. Parkersburg South won the team title with a score of 130.
The top three swimmers in each event automatically qualify for the state championship meet. The next 12 fastest times in each event among all four regions will also qualify for the state meet.
Automatic qualifiers for Morgantown Saturday were Linscheid (1st, 200 freestyle/2nd, 500 freestyle), Avery Housholder (3rd, 200 freestyle), Delaney Housholder (1st, 200 IM/1st, 500 freestyle), Christian Hammer (1st, 100 butterfly/1st, 500 freestyle), Daniel Hammer (3rd, 100 butterfly/3rd, 100 backstroke) and Samantha Lindquist (3rd, 100 breaststroke).
MHS relay teams qualifying were the girls’ 200 medley (2nd), boys’ 200 freestyle (1st), girls’ 400 freestyle (1st) and the boys’ 40 freestyle (2nd).
Automatic qualifiers for UHS were Lindsay (2nd, 200 IM/2nd, 100 freestyle), Madison McCoy (2nd, 100 freestyle), Tyler Zundell (3rd, 500 freestyle) and the girls’ 400 freestyle relay team (3rd).
The state swim meet is scheduled for Feb. 15 and 16 at Morgantown’s Mylan Aquatic Center.
