Paul W. “Sunshine” Shogren, 94, of Oakland, Md., passed away on Jan. 16, 2024, at Cherry Hill Assisted Living. Born on May 30, 1929, in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late Paul W. Shogren, Sr. and Gertrude (Curry) Shogren.
Paul obtained his B.S. in forestry in 1951 from Penn State University. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, and served in Korea during the war. He subsequently served 18 years in the Army Reserves and National Guard. In 1963, he earned a Master of Divinity from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. Paul worked 30 years for the U.S. Government in the Forestry Service and Land Management. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America for 79 years, earning Eagle and Silver Beaver awards. An active member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, he also volunteered with Christian Crossing Thrift Shop, Habitat for Humanity, Garrett County Historical Society, Garrett County Forestry Board, 4-H, the Marine Corps, and the American Legion.
Paul is survived by his loving wife, Donna Lee (Wagner) Shogren; two sons, Gunnar Paul Shogren and wife Stephanie Swan, and Björn Paul Shogren; sister, Gertrude (Shogren) Poppleton; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Sandy (Shogren) Lenthall.
Friends will be received to Celebrate Paul’s Life at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 318 East Oak St. Oakland, MD., at 1 p.m. on Feb. 1, 2024. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Paul’s United Methodist Church or Christian CrossingThrift Shop.
