Dr. William Arthur Gibson, age 90, of Knoxville, Tenn., died Jan. 5, 2024. He was born in Morgantown, the second son of the late Dr. John A. and Eleanor Reynolds Gibson. He graduated from Morgantown High School in 1951, where he was a member of the band. In 1954 he received a degree in physics from West Virginia University where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He earned his PhD in nuclear physics from the University of Rochester, New York, in 1960 and went to work for the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tenn. He left ORNL and went on to work at several other companies most notably he went on to help establish Elographics where he was president and was key in developing the resistive touch touchscreen holding several patents along with John Talmage, PhD.
On June 12, 1965, he married Mary Allene Conner of Timmonsville, S.C. They had two sons, Michael Conner Gibson and John David Gibson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; older brother, Dr. James H. Gibson; son, Michael, and wife of 56 years, Mary. He is survived by son, John, and a sister, Dr. Joan R. Gibson, of Morgantown.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, Feb. 3, from 1:3o-3 p.m. at Berry Highland West, 9913 Sherrill Blvd, Knoxville, TN 37932 with the graveside service to follow at 3:00pm.
