Wilbur “Wil” J. Smith, a cherished son, husband, brother, and uncle, passed away peacefully on Dec. 22, 2023, at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, at the age of 87.

Born on Dec. 11, 1936, in Fayetteville, Wil was the son of Walter and Lizzie M. Smith. Wil lived a life rich in experiences, touching the hearts of those around him. His passing is preceded by his parents; his brothers, Dietz, Edgar, Paul, and Garrel; and his sisters, Ethelda, Zelda, and Anna.

Wil is survived by his devoted wife, Dr. Sarah Xie of Morgantown, who stood by his side through the journey of life. He is also survived by his sisters, Donzella (Donnie) Atha of Fayetteville, and Clara White of Millwood, who shared a lifetime of memories and love with him. Wil leaves a lasting legacy in the hearts of his nieces and nephews, including Ian Smith of Pittsburgh, and Jacob Smith of Beckley, along with many more whom he held dear.

A graduate of Alderson Broaddus and the University of Wisconsin, Wil devoted his career to helping others through education and service. Wil’s formative career started in 1967 when he joined the West Virginia University Office of Research and Development. Wil’s career spanned four decades during which he educated and mentored numerous students as a tenured Associate Professor in the College of Business and Economics, was a prolific grant writer who helped secure significant funding for WVU’s alternative fuels research, and supported working West Virginians through labor education and housing/economic development research as a faculty member in WVU Extension’s Institute for Labor Studies and Research. Wil retired with Emeritus status in 2004 but remained actively connected to his beloved department and program even in retirement.

Known for his kindness, warm spirit, and unwavering love for his family, Wil will be remembered as a pillar of strength and a source of inspiration to those who were fortunate to know him. His focus and wisdom left an indelible mark on the lives of all who crossed his path. Wil was endowed with a passion for music and often shared that passion through song while playing the guitar in his spare time.

May Wil J. Smith rest in eternal peace, surrounded by the love and memories he created throughout his remarkable journey on this earth.

In death, Wil donated his own body to the WVU Human Gift Registry for scientific research. There will be no funeral or memorial service. Thank you all!
