KINGWOOD — Five Preston County families will have a merrier Christmas thanks to the members of the Community Engagement Group and the City of Kingwood.
The group organizes all of the cities public events, like those held at Halloween and Christmas.
Each child participating in the recent Shop with a Cop event received $200 to spend on clothing and toys. City Clerk Rhonda Ridenour, Chief Lawson Stewart and Capt. Douglas Montague were among the city employees who helped push the carts around Walmart while the parents helped the children chose the items they wanted to purchase.
Before the event began, one child came up to the police officers and told them the first thing into the cart would be a new pair of shoes.
While they waited, Amanda Moreland and her children, Phillip, Julie, Brooke, Vanessa and Brandi posed for a photo in front of the Christmas tree.
Along with shopping for gifts, each family also received the makings for a Christmas dinner.
Ridenour said this was the first year the Community Engagement Group held Shopping With a Cop. She said group wants to try to hold the event every year.
