MORGANTOWN — The University girls basketball team wasn’t pleased with how it opened the season. The Hawks didn’t play their best in a loss to cross-town rival Morgantown earlier in the week and came out with a much better performance Friday afternoon in a 68-28 win over Albert Gallatin (Pa.) in the BFS Tip-Off Classic.
“It was a lot better than the other night,” UHS coach Nick Lusk said. “We worked on it, we went over the film from Morgantown and I thought we did a lot better with our defensive rotations. It was a good team effort.”
UHS (1-1) mixed a full-court press with a half-court zone to stiffle AG’s offense in the first half. The Hawks opened the game on an 18-2 run and never looked back.
Ashlyn Weaver and Hannah Stemple led the Hawks with 14 points apiece. Ella Simpson contributed 11 points while Julia Maisel scored eight .
All eight UHS players scored at least two field goals as Riley Braham and Whitney Cox both had six points and Bri Fox added four.
“I just thought that we shared the basketball, which we didn’t do the other night,” Lusk said. “Sometimes I even thought we over-passed a little bit, but sharing the ball is a good thing.”
Mya Glisan led AG with 18 points.
