MORGANTOWN — This one was over before it started.
Friday’s boys’ basketball game between Morgantown High School and Holy Family Catholic (Ky.) ended with the Mohigans (2-0) picking up a 93-18 victory that could have been even worse if not for some time management from MHS.
Despite the lopsided victory, Morgantown head coach Dave Tallman still said his team has work to do.
“I thought we were flat in the first half,” Tallman said. “I wanted to see us play Morgantown basketball in the second half and I thought we did that.”
A layup by the Irish cut the MHS lead to 5-4 early in the first quarter but then the Mohigans (2-0) went on an 18-2 run to close the quarter and seal the victory. This is the second game, in two games, that MHS has scored over 90 points.
Sharron Young led MHS with 20 points and only played in the first three quarters while Izzy Everett added 17, J. Shrewsberry scored 10 and sophomore Waylon Colistra scored 14 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter.
Morgantown’s defense was stifling once again as it forced 38 turnovers and held the Irish (0-5) to 7-of-31 shooting in the contest.
The Mohigans did struggle from deep as they hit just 4-of-27 from behind the arc.
“We came out and had open shots, but I wanted to see us play team ball – get the big guys involved in the post,” Tallman said.
Morgantown will face Parkersburg at 3 p.m. Saturday at University High School as part of the BFS Shootout.
