Rev. William R. Kinsey, 92, of Morgantown, passed into eternity on Oct. 7, 2023, in the home he built, surrounded by his family. Born Aug. 12, 1931, son of William and Sara (Gillman) Kinsey in Johnstown, Pa.
Preceded in death by his parents, infant son, Mark William; brothers and sisters-in-law, Thomas (Catherine) and Ron (Dolores) Kinsey, and mother- and father-in-law, Leona and Don White.
He is survived by wife, Donna; daughters, Sheryl Mock (Daniel), Bear Creek Twp, Pa.; and Merrilee Saccol (Ronald), Franklin, Pa.; grandchildren, Ann K. Raducz (John), Sara E. Bryant (Greg), Anthony Saccol (Billie Jo), Nathan Saccol (Andrea) and Rebecca Saccol; great-grandchildren, Lauren Bryant, Gillian Fiala, Daniel Bryant, Austin Saccol, Olivia Saccol, and Anthony Raducz; and many nieces and nephews.
He will be missed by his West Highland White Terrier, Kirk, who could be found sitting on Bill’s lap watching his favorite sports teams on tv.
In his youth Bill was an Eagle scout. He was a graduate of Otterbein University (College) and United Theological Seminary. After being ordained in the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Johnstown, Pa., he served as pastor at many churches in both the Western Pennsylvania Conference and the West Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church. He served at Suncrest UMC as assistant pastor before retiring. He came out of retirement to serve as interim pastor at Avery UMC. In recent years he attended Community UMC, occasionally filling the pulpit.
In addition to ministering to folks he was the Lance Man for several years in the Morgantown Branch both as a route salesman and branch manager. Bill was a car enthusiast and enjoyed building cars as well as watching races. He was a stained-glass artist and an avid hunter. He enjoyed storytelling and was always ready with a pun. He loved his Westie dogs and enjoyed Pittsburgh sports — the Pirates, Steelers, and Penguins — as well as WVU football and basketball. He loved sharing donuts, cookies and a good cup of coffee with folks of all ages. Bill was the Westwood Middle School Santa Claus for many years, bringing joy to many children throughout Monongalia County.
He was very proud of and loved his wife and family. Bill was a good listener and offered words of encouragement to all. Even in death Bill served others by donating his body to science.
The family would like to thank WVU Medicine Hospice for the wonderful care and comfort that was provided through the last few months — especially Stacy, Carrie, Tricia, Autumn, Barb, Kayla, Mindy and Miranda. We would like to also thank our family and friends who provided meals and most importantly prayers through these last months of Bill’s life.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Boy Scouts of America P.O. Box 152079, Irving, TX 75038; Suncrest United Methodist Church 479 Van Voorhis Rd. Morgantown, WV 26505; or Community United Methodist Church 1966 Grafton Rd. Morgantown, WV 26508.
Friends and family will be received at Suncrest United Methodist Church, 479 Van Voorhis Rd., Morgantown, from 1 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 3, until the time of the memorial service at 2 p.m. Hastings Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
