Donald Woods

Donald Harper Woods, 93, of Morgantown passed away on Friday, Nov. 17, 2023, at his home.

Don was born on Oct. 9, 1930, the son of the late James and Sarah Woods.

Don is a lifelong resident of the Kingwood Pike. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran and an employee of WVU as a millwright. In his free time, Don enjoyed gardening, reading and hunting for ginseng.

Don was a staff sergeant in Air Force intelligence. It wasn’t until this past year that he divulged the communication work he did during the Korean War. He was extremely proud to serve and felt a great responsibility for his work and keeping the knowledge he had secure.

While stationed in Germany, Don enjoyed playing guitar and singing in the barracks alongside another soldier, future music artist Johnny Cash. Don chuckled many times about the fact that his rank as staff sergeant provided him air transportation home versus the troop ship and sea sickness.

Don is survived by his son, Cary Woods and his wife, Kerry, of Morgantown; daughter, Donna Jackson of Cottageville, S.C.; grandchildren, Daniel Woods, Nathan and Matthew Jackson; and sister, Lorna Hart of Morgantown.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife of 64 years, Joanne Woods.

The family would like to give a very special thank you to his caregivers, Kimmy, Terry and Chuck and the staff from Amedisys Hospice. Don found great joy sharing his stories and bringing a smile to those that cared for him.

A graveside service will be held at Summers Cemetery off of Summers School Road, at 2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 20, with Pastor Junius Lewis officiating. Military honors will be provided by the U.S. Air Force.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Covenant Church (Greenbag Road) or Greater Love Family Outreach Ministries.
