Junia Vannoy

Junia Winona Brewer Vannoy of Spicewood, Texas, went home to be with our lord on Oct. 10, 2023.

She was born April 25, 1932, in Green County, Pa. She was married to William Howard Vannoy from Mt. Morris, Pa., in Spruce Street Methodist Church in Morgantown, in 1951. Winona attended elementary schools at Bald Hill, Davistown and Bobtown and graduated from Point Marion High School in Point Marion, Pa., in 1950. She completed her BS and MS Degrees in physical education and science in 1964 at West Virginia University in Morgantown.

She retired to North Port, Fla., after working 11 years for the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company in Morgantown; teaching four years at Mentor, Ohio, High School and serving as Physical Education Teacher and Intramural Director for Kent State University for 24 years in Kent, Ohio. She was elected to the West Virginia Physical Education Hall of Fame in 1989, named the Ohio Sports Director of the Year in 1991 and was included in Who’s Who of American Women’s First Edition. After retirement she was the first recipient of the Kent State University Recreation Services Hall of Fame award in 2006.

Winona served as elder, teacher, trustee and Chair of the Official Board for the First Christian Church in Kent, Ohio, and chaired two major building campaigns for that church. She also served as treasurer for the United Christian Ministries in Kent and chairperson of the Pastoral Search Committee for the United Church of Christ in North Port, Fla., for several years. Winona also served as President of the Homeowners Association for Holiday Park in North Port, Fla.

Winona is survived by one daughter, Sharon Mansfield, wife of George Mansfield of Spicewood, Texas; one son, Gary Vannoy, husband of Karen Vannoy of Oklahoma City, Okla. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Dan Mansfield, married to Jill Goodrich Mansfield, Colleen Mansfield West, married to Jared West, and Erin Vannoy Rose, married to Ashton Rose. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren, Chloe Mansfield, Jack West, Evelyn, Carrick and Ember Rose.

Winona was preceded in death by her husband, William Vannoy; her parents Amos and Gae Eddy Brewer; one brother, Henry Osler Brewe; and one granddaughter, Kristen Michelle Vannoy.

In lieu of flowers, the family is encouraging donations to the amazing caregiving group at Three Oaks Hospice, 7800 Shoal Creek Blvd., Unit 145S, Austin, TX 78757.

Friends and family will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., Morgantown, WV 26505, from 10 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 26, until the time of the funeral service at noon with Rev. Bart Thompson officiating. A graveside service and interment will follow at Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens.
