Larry Wilbur Henderson Sr., a lifelong resident of Core, passed away peacefully and surrounded by his loved ones at his home on Oct. 17, 2023, after a courageous battle with cancer. Larry was born on Feb. 9, 1957, to Wilbur and Virginia Henderson.
Larry enjoyed his job as an equipment operator at Greer Limestone for an impressive 47 and a half years, and was counting down the days to his well-deserved retirement. His dedication to his work was only surpassed by his devotion to his family. He was a loving father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, always ready to lend a hand or share a laugh.
Larry was a man of many interests. He was an avid Mountaineer sports fan and loved laughing along with the Andy Griffith Show. He was also known for his green thumb, cultivating a bountiful vegetable garden each year and generously sharing his harvest with family and friends.
Larry is preceded in death by his son, Larry Henderson Jr.; his nephew, Allen Henderson; and his parents, Wilbur and Virginia Henderson.
He is survived by his son, Thayne (Becca) Henderson; his daughter, Kellie (Daniel) Shaw; his brother, Bill (Linda) Henderson; his grandchildren, Alex Shaw, Gavin Henderson and fiancée Victoria, Addie Johnson, Jade Henderson, and Harper-Rae Henderson; and his nephew and niece, Will Henderson and Family and Nicole (Brian) Debolt and Family.
Family and friends are invited to gather at Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home on Friday, Oct. 20, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., and again on Saturday, Oct. 21, from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. with Pastors Jim Weber and Arnold Dee Hewitt officiating. Following the service, Larry will be laid to rest next to his son at Doll’s Run Cemetery in Core.
