One of the most tenderhearted, yet toughest men passed away peacefully on Oct. 14, 2023. David Lee Allen was born in Morgantown on July 24, 1947, to the late Kenneth G. Allen and Virginia I. Yost Allen.
David graduated from Carlsbad Senior High School, New Mexico, in 1966 and enlisted in the Army immediately after graduation. He served in Cu Chi, Vietnam, 1967-68, as a crew chief and door gunner for the 116th Assault Helicopter Co. He received several military citations and medals, including a Purple Heart.
After being discharged, David settled in Morgantown, working at the WVU Power Plant, Osage No. 3 Coal Mine, Sabraton Chevron and the U.S. Post Office as a letter carrier.
He was well known for his vast knowledge and skills in building and repairing motorcycles. He owned and operated Sabraton Cycle Repair for several years until his illness would no longer allow him. David was a former motorcycle safety instructor for the WV Motorcycle Safety Program.
David was a devout Christian, becoming a born-again believer in 1980. He loved to race, ride and work on motorcycles and was an accomplished pro- licensed motocross racer. He also enjoyed hunting, basketball, the outdoors and spending time with his friends and family. One of his biggest accomplishments was building a 1930 Ford 5 window coupe street rod from the frame and up. His sense of humor and wittiness were ever-present in every aspect of his life.
David is survived by the love of his life, Cathy Scudiere Allen, his wife of 47 years; children, Wendy Habermehl (Klaus), of Gruenstadt, Germany, Pete (Andrea) Allen, of Morgantown, and Carrie (Dan) Prusa, of Morgantown; grandchildren, Bryan and Brittney Habermehl, of Gruenstadt, Germany, Brady and Brionna Allen and Olivia, Norah, Eli, Sam and Hannah Prusa, all of Morgantown; brothers, Ken (Deborah) Allen, of Boerne, Texas, and Larry (Barbara) Allen, of Morgantown; brothers-in-law, Bill (Debra) Scudiere and Jimmy (Tammy) Scudiere and sister-in-law, Lou Ann (J T) Straface, all of Morgantown; along with numerous family members, including cousins, nieces and nephews, and friends whom he loved dearly.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Rudy and Cecelia Scudiere.
The Allen family would like to thank WV Caring Hospice as well as Village Caregivers, especially Mindi for her excellent care of David.
Cremation services have been entrusted to the Fred Jenkins Funeral Home. Family and friends are invited to gather at Sabraton Hill Baptist Church from 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2023, until the time of service at 11 a.m. with Pastor Stephen Dodrill officiating. Private interment will take place at Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or The Alzheimer’s Association.
