KINGWOOD — Members of the Preston County Commission unanimously approved a request from the Preston County Honor Guard to use the courthouse lawn for its Veterans Day Celebration.
Bill Benson, a member of both the Honor Guard and Vietnam Veterans Chapter 977, said the celebration will take place at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 11. It will include guest speakers, a traditional three-shot rifle volley, “Taps” and a prayer for all who have served, are now serving, and those who are still missing in action.
Benson said a musical tribute of patriotic songs will be performed by Lori Rankin and members of the community will provide readings.
“Working in conjunction with the support of the Preston County Commission and the residents of Preston County, Vietnam Veterans Chapter 977 will be the dedication and completion of our veterans sidewalk,” he said.
County Administrator Nathan Raybeck said during Monday’s special session that Lester Neal Likins accepted the position of facilities supervisor. He said Likins’ starting salary will be $48,500, and this is a nonexempt position with a 90-day probationary period.
Commissioners also approved a quote from Preston Machine Inc. to fabricate and install stainless steel plate doors at the county animal shelter.
“When the dogs are let out and in during the winter the mats that are being used lets the heat out. The stainless-steel plates will eliminate this. They are pricey but will save a lot over time,” Raybeck said.
The total cost of the project will be $3,190.39.
