MORGANTOWN — Morgantown boys’ basketball standout Sharron Young is going to play for the Akron Zips, the senior announced on social media Tuesday evening.
When I started this process, I was told to go where you’re loved and where you have the opportunity to make and early impact,” Young told The Dominion Post. “I met a lot of great coaches through the recruiting process but there was something special about the relationship with (head) coach (John) Groce and (assistant) coach (Rob) Fulford.”
Young also held scholarship offers from WVU, Appalachian State, Drexel and Radford, among others.
“They recruited me really hard, spent a lot of time not just building a relationship with me, but my family too, which was really important to me,” Young said. “It felt like I fit in well with the players but most importantly, I feel like I’m a great match for their style of play and will have the opportunity to show that sooner than later.”
Young enters his senior season at MHS as a back-to-back state champion after leading the Mohigans to the Class AAAA title each of the last two seasons. Despite missing several weeks with a broken shooting hand last year, Young was selected as the captain of the Class AAAA All-State team after averaging 21 points, 7.9 rebounds, 6.8 assists and 4.7 steals per game in his junior campaign.
Groce is entering his sixth season as Akron’s head coach and has a 94-59 record with the Zips. Akron went 22-11 last season and made it to the second round of the Mid-American Conference Tournament.
